The NFL season opener, live in downtown Wiesbaden

Week 1 kicks off in prime time in the States, which puts it at 02:20 in the morning over here. That is exactly why the season opener usually falls flat in Germany: watching a stream alone on a laptop is not an occasion, and almost everything in town has locked its doors hours earlier.

We are doing it differently. For Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots we stay open through the night from Wednesday into Thursday — big screen, sound on, taps running, and a room full of people who know the difference between third down and third and long. Wilhelmstraße 38, right in the city centre.

No cover charge, no fee for reserving a table. Reserving is still the most important part of the evening — the reason is a few paragraphs down.

Built for the American community in Wiesbaden

If you are stationed here, working here or just posted here for a while, you already know the problem: the games you grew up with all happen while Germany is asleep. This night is our answer to that, and it is aimed squarely at the crowd around Clay Kaserne and the wider Wiesbaden military community.

You will not be the only American in the room. Bring your unit, bring your family, bring the people who still argue about the 2015 goal line call. Everything here is in English if you want it to be — the staff speak it, the menu translates, and nobody will look at you funny for shouting at a screen at three in the morning.

One thing worth knowing: we run a standing 10% discount on everything for anyone with a valid military, veteran or Bundeswehr ID. That applies on this night too, and every other day we are open.

Seahawks at Patriots: what is on the line

The game is played at Lumen Field in Seattle, one of the loudest buildings in the league. Seahawks fans have gone by the “12th Man” for decades, and that crowd is a genuine competitive factor — visiting offenses regularly switch to a silent count in that stadium.

On the other side are the New England Patriots, the most successful franchise of the modern era with six Super Bowl titles. For New England, opening the season on the West Coast is about as unpleasant a trip as the schedule can hand out: three time zones the wrong way, into a building where you cannot hear your own signals.

For a season opener that is the right mix — two names that even casual fans recognise, and a matchup nobody can call in advance.

Why this night has to be unlocked

On a Wednesday we normally close at 23:30. Kickoff is nearly three hours after that, and the game itself runs another two and a half. That means staff through the night, kitchen through the night, bar through the night — and that is only plannable if we know in advance how many people are coming.

Hence the bar at the top of this page. It shows, live, how many guests have committed through the reservation link for this specific game. The number comes straight out of our reservation system and updates on its own; you do not need to refresh anything.

At 20 confirmed guests we open for the night. At 40 we add a dedicated gameday menu on top. If we do not reach 20, we cancel by email in good time — so nobody drives into town at two in the morning to find a dark door.

The gameday menu — we plan it around you

At 40 confirmed guests we prepare something specifically for this night: a curated gameday menu, or a buffet if the group gets big enough. Running a full à la carte kitchen at these hours makes no sense — a set spread, prepped and waiting for you, does.

What exactly lands on it is still open, and deliberately so: whether it leans towards wings, sliders and loaded fries to share, or a warm buffet for the whole room, we will decide once we know who is coming. Put a note in the comments field when you reserve and you get a say.

If we land between 20 and 40, we still open — bar, cold drinks and snacks, just without the prepared menu. The bar at the top always tells you where things currently stand.

Drinks are the full range either way: four house beers on tap, from the pale lager to our AAB Pale Ale and the Drunken Sailor IPA, plus pitchers for bigger groups. If you plan to make it to the final whistle, filter coffee will serve you better than a third wheat beer.

Getting here, parking, and getting home

Wilhelmstraße 38 sits in the middle of downtown Wiesbaden, about a five-minute walk from Luisenplatz. From Clay Kaserne, Mainz, Rüsselsheim or anywhere else in the Rhine-Main area you are looking at roughly twenty to thirty minutes by car.

For a night like this the car is the realistic option anyway — buses and trains barely run at that hour. The Marktgarage parking garage is a three-minute walk away and open around the clock, and at that time of night there is plenty of free kerbside parking along Wilhelmstraße.

If you are drinking, sort the way back before you start. There are taxi ranks at Luisenplatz and at the main station, and the usual ride-hailing services operate in Wiesbaden at night. The simplest arrangement is four of you in one car with a designated driver — and that driver gets soft drinks from us at a friendly price.
